OpenOffice Extensions: Fast Mail Merge

Mail merge has been a pain for some friends of mine using within their university administrative department, so I’ve been on the hunt for ways to make it easier. Solveig covers OpenOffice 2.x mail merge in an article from 2006 (which I’ve mentioned before), but they still have a few problems with editing the results of the merge before printing labels.

A new extension, Fast Mail Merge, was created to simplify some aspects of creating a mail merge, but I can’t really test it out since it’s not available for OOo 3.0 on Mac OS X (Linux and Windows versions are available). Nonetheless, this extension should prove useful to many OOo users out there.

The Fast Mail Merge extension is buggy, haven’t tested it on Windows but in Linux it’s almost unusable. It can’t play nice with compiz, when compiz is enabled it screws up the window size and then there’s the fact that the extension only allows you to place a field once and it can’t cope with functional fields that already exist. I’m using the 0.8.1 version right now and hope the 1.0 will be a big improvement.
